Atlantic Migratory Flyway

Home to some of the most diverse bird watching in the United States, the Atlantic Migratory Flyway is perfect for anyone, whether you’ve been bird-watching for years or are just taking up the hobby. The island conveniently sits right along the Flyway, giving you instant access to tons of gorgeous varieties. Because this is a major migration point for many birds, there is no limit to the amount that you can spot, and you’re sure to see something new every time you visit.

Along the Flyway, there are several tours and walks that you can take part in to get up close and personal with these majestic creatures. While it’s easy to just step outside and spot tons of beautiful birds, taking a nature tour or walk is the perfect way to get an expert’s perspective and learn more about the gorgeous animals taking to the skies.

Bird Rambles Nature Tours

One of the best opportunities for Jekyll Island bird watching is taking a Bird Rambles Nature Tour. Lydia Thompson is the mastermind behind the operation, and she has more than 25 years of experience bird watching in the area. She will be able to point out various species you will find along the trail, everything from the American Goldfinch to the Field Sparrow, the Red-winged Blackbird to the Northern Cardinal. This is a great way to get a personalized experience with one of the most knowledgeable bird experts around Jekyll Island.

Bird Rambles Nature Tours are held every Thursday from September through May. They begin at 9 a.m. and generally run until noon. Tours begin at the Jekyll Island Wharf and cost $30 per person.

Ranger Walks

Ranger Walks are another great way to explore the beauty of Jekyll Island and all the birds that visit. On these walks, you will be led by a park ranger who can tell you all about the various species, as well as the gorgeous nature surrounding you. The programming is updated every season, so there will be something new and interesting to discover every time you return. With more than a thousand acres of forest, shoreline, and marshes, you’ll never run out of land to explore!

Ranger Walks in Jekyll Island occur every Saturday from December through March at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Walks can last from 45 to 90 minutes. Reservations are required, cost $7 per person, and must be made 30 minutes before the tour begins.

Bird watching is a great activity for all ages, so the entire family can join in on the fun. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a newbie at bird watching, there is plenty to be seen on Jekyll Island.
