A Guide to Fishing on Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island is a gem off the coast of Georgia. This historic spot has grand homes that once belonged to families such as the Rockefellers and Goulds. It was the place to be! Even as far back as the 1800s, this was a place to stay, relax, and recharge. Today, it retains all of its historical charms and is still one of the best places in the country for a peaceful vacation. However, there’s much more going on, including the Sea Turtle Center, a world-class water park, museums, and more.

One of the great attractions is Jekyll Island fishing. When fishing on Jekyll Island, there’s almost no limit to what you can experience. We’re about to give you a taste of fishing fun here. Once you discover how to angle, get ready to browse the great Jekyll Island vacation rentals on offer with Parker-Kaufman!

Fish You’ll Catch

Jekyll Island has a lot of great fishing locations, from St. Andrew’s Beach and Glory Beach parks to Driftwood Beach on the north part of the island. The best part is that fishing can be done here all year.

You may never hook the same fish twice with all the great waterways around the Jekyll Island area! You may find a redfish on your hook or a spotted sea trout. Anglers also snag flounder, tarpon, tripletail, jack crevalle, and whiting. Who knows? You may even take your picture with a freshly caught shark or barracuda. With so much variety, there’s almost no reason not to make Jekyll Island the number one place to call your fishing home. Here’s a tip: Make sure you know about size regulations and bag limits before you come.

Fly Fishing

Since Jekyll Island is so close to Cumberland and St. Simons Islands, there are many great places to try your fly! Although fly fishing in the area can be challenging, there are a lot of fish in the saltwater marshes, so if you’re patient, you may be handsomely rewarded! Fly fishing on Jekyll Island is seasonal, so if you want to make this sport part of your stay, it’s best to find companies that can help you out. One company to call is Southeastern Angling. They can get you right where you want to be at just the right time of year! For example, their website says, “Sight fishing triple tail with the fly is best from late March to June off Jekyll Island.” You can reach Southeast Angling at (912) 270-7300 or email them at info@southeastangling.com for more information.

Pier Fishing

One of the most popular spots to get your line in the water is the Jekyll Island Pier. The Jekyll Island Fishing Pier is said to be one of only three ocean piers on the Georgia coast, so a trip here is worth it. The Pier is located in the Clam Creek Picnic Area of Jekyll Island, and it’s excellent for fishing and crabbing. You can also purchase ice, bait, and more at Jekyll Island Fishing Center nearby.

Fish caught in this area include everything from mullets to sharks. One advantage of fishing in this spot is the proximity to amenities such as restrooms, tables, and grills. It’s near many local beaches, so it’s the perfect spot to bring the family a day of worry-free fun. There’s still lots to see for visitors who don’t fish in this area. It’s a prime spot to walk along and see the abundant wildlife and sea views. The Pier is located at North Riverview Drive and is open all the time, Monday through Sunday, and it is lit at night. You can reach the Pier at (912) 635-4004 for more information.

In-Shore Fishing

If you enjoy fishing inshore, Jekyll Island and the surrounding areas have a lot of variety. Inshore fishing charters in the Jekyll Island area may target fish such as trout, redfish, sheepshead, and tripletail. If you’re going to venture out to sea to cast your line, a company such as The Georgia Fishing Company can help. They have fishing charter departures leaving from the public boat launch and can get you to some of the best spots. They can also get you offshore if you want to fish the deeper waters. Reach them at (912) 617-5577.
